Blue-eared Kingfisher, Bird in Singapore Zoo.
News travel fast in Singapore especially when there is a very interesting and attractive bird sighting. The recent Blue-eared Kingfisher sighting at the zoo in Singapore
was not an exception. You would see many photographers with long lenses aiming at the tiny bird. Like others, we too packed our lenses, tripods and cameras to try our luck on the Blue-eared Kingfisher at the Singapore zoo. Although the destination was at the zoo, it was by no means captive. Those who observed the bird earlier told me that they saw them nesting and raising their chicks. I found it rather unusual for the bird to nest in August/September period. Normal nesting period for bird in this region is in April/May.

We arrived at the zoo at around 10:30 am. Many photographers had gathered. It did not take long to spot the bird. It was happily feeding and perching on the Ginger plant by the water. Long and short lenses, tripod or hand held, everyone tried. Here is my contribution, the Blue-eared Kingfisher at the Singapore zoo perching in the ginger.

A few years ago, we also spotted a pair of Blue-eared Kingfisher nesting at the reservoir. On the first day, there were only 2 to 3 of us. As the news got around, there were 20-30 photographers trying to get the shots from the narrow path. Can you imagine a walking path fit just for two people, now cramped with 20-30 people? It had caused such a chaos and created a bad impression for photographers.
” Birds of a feather flock together”. In the case of Singapore, where social media is so prevalent with the excellent island wide coverage on 3G or 4 G networks, news and images really travel fast. I believe Singapore is the city with the ” highest density for long lenses from 400mm to 800mm ” in the world. I am not talking about a typical football match but rather sighting of birds in Singapore. Indeed the Blue-eared Kingfisher is a beautiful bird found in Singapore.
